The hard-working Canadians ate condemned to death between the rapidly growing masses of hardly-workers: Ottawa and the unemployed/welfare block. The tendency has been strengthened by the GSI, adding cross-border shopping and business emigration. The North American Free Trade Agreement is only the last drop, coup de grace. Apparently the government does not. know about Mel! Hurtig’s book (The Betrayal of Canada), and has started to read the North Shore News a bit too late. Other- wise, they could have escaped most of their mistakes. ’ Now it is hard to believe that Canada could continue to enjoy :its ‘home-made cake,’’ never mind the topping. . They have certainly realized the ‘fiasco of the unconstitutional GST. The letters of four premiers (including two ex-premiers) in my mailbox attest to this, stating that it was unjustifiable, unreasonable, etc.; Ontario and Alberta have challenged it in the courts. Though the editors cannot give out addresses, I wish that Mr. Cranfield could get a free, four- color GST-shirt from me some- how. Its design is a GST graph with a text ''992: The Vikings of Leif Ericson discover Canada — 1992: Canadians discover the GST's secret.”’ Betrayed Canadians should not be impatient with Mr, Mulroney. It takes a fong time to wake up fully from a short, bad dream. Zoltan A. Simon North Vancouver Why reduce accessibility? Dear Editor: The North Vancouver District Council is to be lauded for its at- tempts this year to be more ac- cessible to the public. Why then would it reduce that accessibility in the future by voting to hold public meetings every second Monday, instead of every Monday? The fact that the decision was made late at night (after 11 p.m.), when mental faculties are proba- bly. reduced, perhaps indicates how valid the decision is, and how valid most decisions are when made late at night during lengthy meetings! One councillor is purported to have pointed out, ‘It was the men who stayed.’’ Such a sexist com- ment even when made late at night, indicates how much his mental capabilities needed a rest!
