An aspiring actor and a rollar-skating waiter become entangled in 3 race-fixing racket. Entertaining exhibit worth seeing Fron page 25 David Milne, Arthur Lismer, and Jock MacDonald are all generously on display, miost demanstratin the ovenvhelming influence of the Group of Seven, and all, for the most part, blissfully ignorant of the more radical innovations then emanating frora Europe. Although works of many late 20th-century American artists are interspersed throughout this ex- hibit — Sam Francis, Helen Frankenthaier, Adolph Goulieb, Robert Motherwell, to list the more prominent — few of their pieces command the majesty or power of Andy Warhol's 1976 Portrait of Russell Means. What is true of the American ar- tists is no less true of the European _artisis whose works have found their way into the possession of Vancouver collectors. Tha works by Oskar Kokaschka, Fernand Leger, Pablo Picasso and Kurt Schwitters that have been in- cluded in this exhibit may not be the groundbreaking masterpieces we commonly associate with these renowned artists but they do reflect an easy and unpretentious intimacy that is no less valuable for all that. On the whole this is an in- genious and largely entertaining exhibit that is worth seeing despite its shortcomings. It probably tells us less about the true range and inclinations of Vancouver's art collectors than it does about the magnitude of their obsessions. Obviausly there is much that is not represented here and, as must be expected, certain biases are reflected in the selection. Clearly a dozen such shows, all uniquely different, could be mounted on the basis of the premise given above; but if the general tendencies embodied here: are characteristic, Vancouver col- lectors show a more than healtiny appreciation of the rich resources to be mined in their own back yard. Hopefully this exhibit will be but the first in an ongoing series that explores the full range of Vancouver's private art collec- tions. ere er re er rt ___" BUT MAT 1S “PEIFECTION: Jage You QUESTIONING MY DESIRE ‘To HAVE ZiPRY, BUT A NEvgotic NEEO To Deny cHACS?
