24 - Sunday, May 6, 1999 - North Shore News SPIRITUALLY SPEAKING Program explores Faithful Women VISION TV celebrates the spirit of Faithful Women from around the world in a special seven-part series beginning on Friday, May 11. A co-production between Vision TV (Shaw Cable 27) and the Na- tional Film Board of Canada’s Studio D, Faithful Women docu- ments the first-ever Women’s In- terfaith Dialogue, held in June 1988 under the sponsorship of the World Council of Churches. Throughout six exciting days, women from five continents, rep- resenting a cross-section of the world’s religions, gathered in Toronto. They shared the ways in which their differing traditions af- fect women’s lives, and how women’s realities and perspectives are altering many traditions. On May 11, the series begins with the women discussing the dif- ferent authority and _ leadership styles that women are bringing to their faith’s traditions. As the series unfolds, other issues to be considered will include: » the liberation and interpretation of sacred texts; ethe relationship of native spirituality to ‘‘mainstream’”’ tradi- tions; *working towards peace in the Middle East; the priorities and perspectives of various faiths; * historical, cultural and media stereotypes. Rita Deverell, Vision TV anchor and host/producer of Vision's weekly human affairs program “It’s About Time,” will host the series. Deverell believes that ‘‘this is a fare opportunity to sit down and meet with women of many religious traditions — Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian, Jewish, Native Spirituality and Wiccan. Faithful Women can be seen on Vision TV on Friday, May 11, 18, 25, June 1, 8, 15, and 22 at 4 p.m. (repeated 9 p.m. and Monday at !2 noon). Submitters fear comet ACCORDING TO the United Submitters International (USI), an asteroid or comet might hit the earth on Saturday, May 19. Approximately 50 North Shore families belong to the group, which | follows the teachings in the Qur’an. According to a spokesperson, USI believes only Allah should be worshipped, and rejects the idea of the ear- thly spiritual leaders that are followed by Muslims. The possibility that an asteroid might hit the earth this year was foretold by Dr. Rashad Khalifa, a self-proclaimed messenger who discovered a mathematical code in the Qur’an and advocated the ideals of the United Submitters International. Khalifa was stabbed to death on January 31, and US! spokespeople say the asteroid will be a retribution for the crime. Following his death, USI fixed May 19 as the probable time of the event based on the Qur’an and Khalifa’s own mathematical Qur’anic code. According to the code, the number 19 ‘represents God’s signature on His creations.’? As one example of the number’s relevance, the society notes that the first verse in the Qur’un consists of 19 letters, the first and last revelations each have 19 words, and there are 114 chapters (19x6) in the Qur’an. According to members of USI, warnings about the cosmic event come directly from the Qur’an and can be verified. For more information, write P.O.
