THE NEW (1988) income tax forms are not radically dif- ferent from those of previous years, but there will be enough changes to cause concern to people who are in need of help to complete their tax returns. Peopie with questions about the changes often call the North Shore Information and Volunteer Centre. Staff and volunteers will attend an all-day training workshop giver by Revenue Canada to prepare for requests for help from people of all ages who need assistance and whose annual income is less than $5,000. Following this, there will be free public lectures for seniors at three locations. The first will be Friday, Feb. 17, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., at Silver Harbour Centre, 144 E. 22nd St., North Vancouver, 980- 2474, with speaker Linda Baziuk for Revenue Canada. For all three of the free lectures, seniors should pre-register by call- ing the centres involved. Seniors can take their income tax forms as well as tax slips along to the lec- tures and ask those questions troubling them. People of all ages with minimum income who are handicapped and unable to get down to the centre or to the seniors’ lectures can call ami ask for a home visit. Counsellors indicate there are two important changes in the new regulations. The $1,000 investment income deduction is no longer available and the $500 employment deduction is no longer applicable. The new forms also use the term ‘credits’ instead of the old ‘deduc- tions’ and the word ‘amounts’ is also something new. New mules also apply to splitting income between married persons. People who have done this in the past are advised to read and study the new regulation. Volunteers will be able to assist persons who are in need of help following the mid-February workshop.
