On the North Shore, free legal advice is available to those who cannot afford a lawyer at North Vancouver Neighbourhood House. Legal advice is available in a variety of areas including small claims actions, landlord and tenant disputes, employer and employee relations, welfare and WCB claims and appeais, wills, and un- contested divorces. Each year more than 180 law students and 51 lawyers volunteer their time to operate weekly even- ing clinics. The legal advice pro- gram has an operating budget of more than $100,000 and its major funders are the Law Foundation of B.C. and the federal government Challenge ’88 program. This summer, 25 full-time sala- ried students are operating 20 clinics throughout the Lower Mainland. The clinics started in May and will continue until Aug. 12. The Law Students’ Legal Advice Program is B.C.’s largest legal aid organization and has been operating free legal clinics in Greater Vancouver since 1969. For appointments call 987-8138. Japanese students arrive NORTH VANCOUVER’'S Seymour-Asumigaoka Society is planning a number of festivities this summee to welcome six youths arriving here from the community of Asumigaoka in Japan. The youths are scheduled to ar- rive July 30 as part of an exchange program sponsored by the Seymour-Asumigaoka Society. They will each live with two North Shore families, one family for one weck and a second host family for the second week. Three special events have been planned and include: a backyard barbecue to welcome the visitors at 1893 Layton Dr. in Blueridge on July 30 at 3:30 p.m. On Aug. 7 at 11 a.m.,a picnic at Cates Park will see visitors chang- ing host families, and on Aug. 13 a farewell party is planned at.’the home of Cindy Horton, a director of the exchange program, at 5400 Indian River Dr. at 3 p.m. The Seymour-Asumigaoka: Society is a hands-across-the-sea organization representing residents of North Vancouver's Seymour community who are involved ina sister-community relationship with the community of /Asumigaoka in Chiba, Japan. , loss?
