in youth parliament

THE COMMUNITY of West
Vancouver was represented at the
59th session of the British Colum-
bia Youth Parliament held last
December. .

spent a busy five days con-
templating a series of government
bills and private members’ resolu-
tions.

Foremost among the gov-
ernment bills passed by this year’s
session was the Camp Phoenix
Act, which confirms a traditional
project for the Youth Parliament:
the fund-raising for, organization
of, and implementation of a
week-long camp for first-time
campers.

As well as being an organization
which requires its members to vol-
unteer their services for the cause
of Youth Serving Youth, the
Youth Parliament seeks to pro-
mote awareness of, and apprecia-
tion for, the parliamentary system
of government. To this end, the
session passed the Education Act,
which involves, among other
things, three weekend debating
conferences open to all interested
youth.

the National Youth Parliament
Act, Regional Act, the two con-
