Experience outer space HOW DO astronauts sleep in space? What does the Earth look like from 200 miles away? Is zero gravity as disorienting as it seems? Local audiences can get dramatic answers to their questions about life on board a space shuttle. The CN IMAX Theatre, one of Expo 86’s biggest attractions, recently reopened with an IMAX space film called The Dream is Alive. The 37-minute film, narrated by Walter Cronkite, has been described by veteran spaceman Robert Crip- pen, and by astronauts involved in its production, as “the closest thing to being there."” Filmed by i4 astronauts over three separate 1984 space shuttle missions, the super-sized format of The Dream is Alive draws viewers into the film action and allows them to feel, directly and personally, the thrills and challenges of life in space. The ‘you are there’ quality of IMAX technology leaves audiences rocked by the thunders of almost too-close-for-comfort shuttle lift-offs; awed by the brilliant blue beauty of our own planet as seen from orbital space; afloat in the eerie weightlessness of zero gravity ‘vith tae flight crew. The film comains several space mission and cinematic firsis. Kathy Sullivan becomes the first woman 16 walk in space. The astronauts attempt the first-ever in-space satellite repair. The Dream is Alive has special interest for Cana- dians. One of the space shuttie Challenger’s missions filmed included Canadian payload specialist Marc Garneau, and viewers are given a tour of the shuttle flight deck where the Canadarm remote manipulator is controlled. From shuttle launch to landing, from astronaut training to complicated technical manoeuvres, The Dream is Alive shares the marvels of space with ear- th-bound audiences in a way that wasn’t possible be- fore giant-screen IMAX technoiogy, and it satisfies the space-focussed cravings and imaginings of viewers everywhere.
