DONE POC RT Te PN SE. Re Tea ‘oy Dee {Doug Collins ® get this straight ® ONE OF the difficulties in reporting on the antics of the B.C. Teachers Federation and its associates is that there is so much propaganda. Neither we nor the teachers can believe half the stuff that is put out. Take the West Van Teachers Association. On April 22, it sent out a so-called ‘‘newsletter’’ to members in which it stated that the province-wide BCTF referen- dum on job action (i.e., whether to strike on Tuesday) ‘‘produced a 70 per cent mandate...’’. But that’s not correct. The actual number of teachers who voted, lam told, was 22,367. Of those, 15,656 voted ‘‘yes’’, and 6,711 ‘‘no’’. That, it is true, is within a spit of 70 per cent of those who cast ballots. But | checked with BCTF public rela- tions man Arnie Myers and he confirmed that there are 33,317 people in this province who hoid teaching certificates, are members of the BCTF, and were entitled to vote, even though not all of them sare working full time. That means that one in three teachers didn’t vote at all, while [the true percentage of those op- ting for a strike was 46.9. There are other things worth noting. 1 On Monday, West Van Teachers gathered to hear the word from the BCTF’S Mike Lombardi, who was there to per- suade them to hit the bricks, they not being the most militant in B.C. as far as support for BCTF foolishness is concerned, as Tues- day’s count showed. The media were not allowed in, but Deep Throat tells me Lombar- Idi didn't have an easy ride. There was quite a lot of opposition. One teacher complained that a BCTF film on the dispute had been edited to create the wrong impression. A BCTF member in the movie was seen stating: ‘‘The teachers -| must stand united.’’ What he real- ly said, according to the com- | plainer, was: ‘‘The teachers must stand united but this is not the right way to go about things.”’ According to my source, Lom- bardi admitted that teachers in 22 of the province’s 75 school : districts voted against the BCTF’s | going on strike. But it’s hard even for teachers to get the details. WVTA officials refused to in- form members what the vote was in West Van, for instance. Were they afraid of something? My buddies Peter Le Faivre and Kit Krieger (who like me so much that they write letters to the editor § about me) are co-presidents of the WVTA. And both were big for a walkout, they being hot socialists. Le Faivre, indeed, was heard to say that although the B.C. School Trustees had declared the con- templated walkout to be illegal, he would consider it to be legal until he got a letter from a school trustees lawyer informing him otherwise. Are these the people who are supposed to be teaching the kids about ethics? x kk More cheering news: On May 23 there is to be a con- ference in Vancouver on The Emotional Well-Being of Im- migrant Women. The emotional well-being of im-, migrant women? How about the emotional well-being of non- immigrant women, single women, married women, and women who are not really women? How about the emotional well-being of bricklayers? The field is vast, and no doubt the, professors, social workers and social engineers ‘are working on all that right now. The welcoming address at the Conference On The Emotional Well-Being of Immigrant Women is to be given by one Katun Siddi- ai, which figures. But the keynote speaker is none other than that § multicult marvel Mary Collins, | MP for Capilano. Oh well, | guess that figures, too. Funding for the event is by the Multicult Directorate of Canada. Which means you are paying for the proceedings whether you want to or not. Not only are we being invaded. We are paying to be invaded. NV pianist places in national meet NORTH VANCOUVER’S Michelle Mares finished second in a prestigious national music com- petition held recently in Montreal. The 15-year-old pianist, who was the youngest musician entered in the 12-day CBC Radio competi- tion, finished behind 29-year-old Angela Cheng of Edmonton. In addition to her finish in the CBC competition, Mares, a Sen- tinel Secondary School student, has previously won the Canadian Music Competiton, Munich’s Steinway competition and a com- petition sponsored by the Montreal symphony orchestra.
