16 - Wednesday, December 24, 1986 - North Shore News TWO WHISTLER guides are us- ing snowmobiles to ferry tourists to the glorious backcountry wilds of the Whistler area. For the past two years, Roh Meilleur and Don Martin and their Whistler Snowmobile Services have led groups of sightseers from the mountain’s valley to its up: er Coast Range. The service makes the tranqui! beauty of the mountains in winter accessible to pecple who would not otherwise have left the highway. ‘‘Having grown up on snowmobiles in the cold winters of Manitoba and knowing how much fun it is, | was surprised to find that it wasn’t even a sport in B.C.,’’ Meilleur says. ‘‘We felt we could offer peonle 2 taste of the wilderness and the sport while en- mt eel HIGH SCHOOLS on the North Shore wrapped up basketball competition recent- ly. Cress-country skiers race THE 7-Up Cup cross-country ski racing series is scheduled to resume in 1987, The first race of the season took place in Kelowna Dec. 13 and 14 and was hosted by the Telemark Ski Club. Made up of seven races, the 7- Up series is held throughout the province on four weekends. The winners will be determined by a point system and culminate with the B.C. championships at 100 Mile House Feb. 14 and 15. Because cross-country skiing is a participation sport, the age dif- ference will range from under seven years to 55 and older. In addition to B.C. team members competing, the series will involve racers from across the province. suring them a safe journey.”” The pair’s success in creating the new tour service hinges on a thriv- ing winter tourist market that fre- quents the rnountain ski resort. Increasingly, these visitors come from points such as Tokyo, Toronto or Texas, a::d while they may not be skiers, they seck a rela- tively easy way to get off the beaten track. Whistler has the added advan- tage of being located just outside the boundaries of a provincial park where snowmobiles are not permit- ted. East of Whistler, Garibaldi Provincial Park sprawls, a large and diverse park without vehicular access. West of Whistler is the territory that the two guides explore, a vast track of mountainous country NEW STOCK * DEMOS TRADES * ONE OF A KIND « 110 watt integrated ower amp rand ~ {99” SUZ5S stretching from Brandywine and Powder mountains in the south to Chilcotin Range in the north. While both guides know the in- sides and outsides of snowmobiles well enough to fix them blindfold- ed, neither is bent on using them all the time. Both men are keen out- doorsmen, and Meilleur admits that he would much rather ski or hike to an alpine destination than use the thrust of internal combus- tion. They started the guided service because they believed they could develop a market for it. They have also taken the lead in cooperating with the ministry of forests and lands to establish des- ignated snowmobiling routes that don’t impinge on other forms of winter recreation, One such route — the main route for day trippers ~— follows 16 Mile Creek just north of Whistler above Green Lake, up to Showh Lake where they've built a log cabin for their guests. There, guests can warm themselves around a potbelly stove while they consume a gourmet lunch and swap tales about their experiences. The lake also offers excellent ice fishing for rainbow trout. Whistler Snowmobile Services may also be offering longer trips this winter to the newly completed Tyax Lodge, a remote resort on Tyaughton Lake, 22 kilometres north of Goldbridge.
