IT’S NOT in the Guinness Book of World Records but it is estinvated that nearly 40 kilograms of solid rock are carried into North American homes every year by water. That's the weight of the billions upon billions of microscopic grains of dissolved rock which flow through our taps. fn the course of its natural recycling, fresh water absorbs mineral impurities such as calcium and magnesium from the ground. These minerals remain even after water has been purified for drink- ing, and adversely atfect our food, the appearance of our clothes and plumbing systems. About’ 85 per cent of Canadian water supplies contain enough minerals to cause significant pro- blems in home uses. It is reasonably simple to detect hard water. Soap doesn’t lather, or lathers poorly. Instead it combines with water's hard minerals to form a curd which leaves a scummy deposit on surfaces, hair or clothing. Water heaters often fail because of the scale build-up from heating hard water. Such mineral scale can easily be found in kettles. However, even the hardest water can be softened through the use of a water softening appliance. Among the benefits from soft- ened water are longer-wearing clothes, restored efficiency to water heating equipment and bet- ter tasting food.
