An idea in the mind of David Cox, former social worker, developer of the False Creek live aboard marina, Vietnam refugee worker, and motor- cycle racer, among other in- teresting occupations. Cox, 35, had just become the proud new father of now two-year-old Benjamin ‘“‘bunny’’. His dismay at the difficulties of shopping with junior led him to the idea of creating a market specifically designed for children and their parents. To support his thinking was the realization that the most likely customers were the new baby boom generation parents like himself. The Kids Only Market was designed for children, with Comes This new style of parent ts older, more affluent, more likely to limit their family to one or two children, and, therefore, more inclined to spend that affluence on the little one or ones. The recent gain in popularity of specialty clothing and toy stores rein- forced David’s thinking that a market geared to this new parent might work both socially and economically. Ideas and reality are, un- fortunately, very far apart. Where would the market be located? Who would fund it, design it, and build it? and, who would the tenants be? A year’s search turned up a general partner, Vivian and Alan Trethewey of Van- couver. Their son, Derek Trethewey, the youngest of five boys and recent father of Casey ‘‘noodles,’’ jumped at the idea. Months of careful consideration finally came together in a design all felt would work on a social and economic level. Next, David and Derek tackled the task of filling the market with suitable tenants. Not just anyone would do. A decision was made to exclude national chains. Each shop would be required to specialize in a narrow pro- duct line aimed at the 12 and under child. They sought out tenants with existing shops they felt fit the criteria of the market and tenants came to them in great numbers. If the shop they thought should be in the market didn’t exist, they put it together themselves and found someone to run it.
