Pierre’s plot?

NE LAST DISQUIETING thought about

the election.....

Supposing it was all a plot
by Pierre Trudeau?

! mean, [ felt wonderful
massaging my knuckles the
morning after the vote,
replaying in my mind the best
moments of the savaging, the
fist hitting the ballot box, the
kicking in the political groin,
the stomping on the Liberals
when they were finally down.
Lord, it had been a glorious
gang-up!

lI mean, in most countries
people simply don’t get to ex-
ecute nearly the entire
government. I’ll bet the in-
cidence of ulcers is going to
drop dramatically across
Canada. The Liberals, after
all, were a bloated lamahood
whose ethos had long since
died.

Actually the single most
cruel and pitiless thing to
have happened in the election
was the torture of John
Turner being elected in
Quadra. It was called a sym-
pathy vote. Don't believe it!
It was a nasty, nasty act, the
worst thing I've seen since the
seal hunt.

could have announced his
resignation as party leader

the next day. Now, he’s stuck
with the most fruitless,
useless, hopeless task in the
universe, doomed to play
Sisyphus to a Grit rock that
can never be rolled to the top
of the hill again.

Give up, Liberals! You’re
dead! Form your inevitable
alhance with the NDP and
get on with history.

Poor John Turner maybe
doesn’t know it. But | think,
instinctively, as fans of blood
sports, the voters of Quadra
knew the most awful thing
they could possibly do was
nail Turner up there on his
electoral cross and leave him
hanging for, say, four years.

Otherwise he’d be out of
his misery and he could go
back to the exeellent lifestyle
of a Bay Street lawyer.

But.... but....

Supposing this was. al!
Trudeau's scheme?
Remember who his political
hero was: Machiavelli.
Loyalty to a party is for dim-

Am I beginning to sound
paranoid? Forgive me, but
Machiavelli does keep com-
ing to mind. Why would
Trudeau figure the Liberals
owed him anything? Hadn’t
they dared to hint that he
should leave? Machiavelli
never said anything about
allowing the turkeys you
abused to abuse you

Sixteen years of
megalomania set free is liable
to leave anyone feeling a bit
like Bavaria’s mad King Lud-
wig IT.

So the dark theory forming
in my brain is that Trudeau
