A4 - Sunday, September 16, 1984 - North Shore News Strictly personal by Bob Hunter Pierre’s plot? NE LAST DISQUIETING thought about the election..... Supposing it was all a plot by Pierre Trudeau? ! mean, [ felt wonderful massaging my knuckles the morning after the vote, replaying in my mind the best moments of the savaging, the fist hitting the ballot box, the kicking in the political groin, the stomping on the Liberals when they were finally down. Lord, it had been a glorious gang-up! lI mean, in most countries people simply don’t get to ex- ecute nearly the entire government. I’ll bet the in- cidence of ulcers is going to drop dramatically across Canada. The Liberals, after all, were a bloated lamahood whose ethos had long since died. Actually the single most cruel and pitiless thing to have happened in the election was the torture of John Turner being elected in Quadra. It was called a sym- pathy vote. Don't believe it! It was a nasty, nasty act, the worst thing I've seen since the seal hunt. _If he had been defeated, he could have announced his resignation as party leader the next day. Now, he’s stuck with the most fruitless, useless, hopeless task in the universe, doomed to play Sisyphus to a Grit rock that can never be rolled to the top of the hill again. Give up, Liberals! You’re dead! Form your inevitable alhance with the NDP and get on with history. Poor John Turner maybe doesn’t know it. But | think, instinctively, as fans of blood sports, the voters of Quadra knew the most awful thing they could possibly do was nail Turner up there on his electoral cross and leave him hanging for, say, four years. Otherwise he’d be out of his misery and he could go back to the exeellent lifestyle of a Bay Street lawyer. But.... but.... Supposing this was. al! Trudeau's scheme? Remember who his political hero was: Machiavelli. Loyalty to a party is for dim- ‘wits. Power ts there to be us- ed according to individual whim, oh prince. Machiavelli would certain- ly have approved of everything Trudeau ever did. Trudeau started off as a PLEADED GUILTY Carrier helps police round-up suspects INFORMATIOIN FROM a Kenth Road resident and a sharp eyed North Shore News carne: Sunday led West Vancouver Pohece to two Vancouver men who have been jailed tor five counts each related to ress dential break ons in) West Vancouver Acting on word, from the resident and the carner, of suspicious persons tn the 4900 block of Kerth, pole arrived to find two men ina car that also contamned a quantity of sterea equip ment Roger Ravyvmond Mc. Changing into a Liberal was ke trying on a new scarf. He just plucked whatever strings offered power. He was a con- frol freak. Why would a left- wing Tory look any different ‘to him than a rightwing Grit? The horrible thought crosses my dim, dim mind that maybe what Trudeau saw in the swirling flakes was that by planting a timebomb in the hands of Turner & Co., he could guarantee the elec- tion of a fellow Quebecker who was maybe also some- thing of a fellow traveller. Am I beginning to sound paranoid? Forgive me, but Machiavelli does keep com- ing to mind. Why would Trudeau figure the Liberals owed him anything? Hadn’t they dared to hint that he should leave? Machiavelli never said anything about allowing the turkeys you abused to abuse you Sixteen years of megalomania set free is liable to leave anyone feeling a bit like Bavaria’s mad King Lud- wig IT. So the dark theory forming in my brain is that Trudeau pulled one last great fast one on us, substituting the nearest thing to himself for of Vancouver, were arrested and charged with three counts each of break, enter and theft and two of posses sion of stolen property The two pleaded guilty to the charges in court Tuesday and were sentenced to 1K months on cach count. the sentences tao be served con currently himself, cutting the gonads out of les Anglais yet one more time. He did take judo, didn’t he? Don’t worry. This is all hysteria, I?m sure. How could it possibly be true? And of course it is an insult to Brian Mulroney and all those hardworking Tories to suggest for a minute that the new guy didn’t get there by virtue of blood, sweat, tears and cosmic timing. But | wonder. You know, I really wonder. Please tell me it couldn’t possibly be true. Good play is for doers. Wind-ups, batteries, & push buttons are for watchers.
