A2 - Sunday, March 13, 1983 - North Shore News bg & Z Strictly personal — by Bob Hunter EPUT OFF reading a book called The Fate of The Earth by Jonathan Schell as long as I could on the grounds that I “knew” what nuclear war was all about. And also because who wants to get depressed reading about the most depressing subject imaginable? Schell’s book, as it turns out, doesn’t merely leave you depressed. It leaves you shattered. I finished tt a few days ago and, frankly, I've been numb ever since. Mentally. Emotionally. Almost physically. What Schell does is tackle the nuclear question head- on, telling you absolutely everything it is possible to know about what a nuclear war would really mean. After reading the book, it is impossible not to want to throttle the first idiot who talks about a “hmited” - muclear__war or ————-utter madness — the possibility of winning a auclear war. Schell’s research into the “vast unknown,” as Robert McNamara called it, of a nuclear battle, quite literally chillsthe soul. Here is one passage: “In the first moments of a ten-thousand megaton at- tack on the United States ... flashes of white light would suddenly illumine large areas of the country as thousands of suns, each one brighter than the sun itself, blossomed over cities, suburbs, and towns. “In those same moments, when the first wave of missiles arrived, the vast majority of the people in the regions first targeted would be irradiated, crushed, or burned to death. The thermal pulses would subject more than six hundred thousand square miles, or one-sixth of the total land mass of the nation, toa. . level of heat that chars human beings. “Tens of millions” of people would go up in smoke. As the = attack proceeded, as much as three-quarters of the country could be subjected = lo tcendiary levels of heat and blast waves of a minimum, of five pounds per square inch. Virtually all the habitations, places of work. and other man-made things there — substantially the whole human construct: of the United States would be vaporized, blasted or otherwise pulvenzed out of existence. Yet even this nightmare would prove to be a relatively minor irritant compared to the effects of the depletion of the ozone layer, which protects the earth's surface from the deadly ultra-violet radiation coming form the sun. ‘The exptosiion = of “merely” ten thousand megatons (the world’s total arsenal is five times that) would reduce the ozone layer in the Northern Hemisphere by anything from 30 to 70 per ‘cent, which would have the effect of “scalding” and blinding not only al! humans and STEP INTO SPRING (Items on sale not exactly as illustrated) WITH SAVINGS _AT STEPHANIE'S carpet-bombing into’ im- mense infernal regions, literally tens of thousands of square miles in aera, from which escape is impossible.” Earth would literally become Hell. And this would just be the beginning. An ath-out nuclear assault would leave “animals €xposed to the sun, but virtually all plant life right down to the unicellular organisms in the sea which he at the base of the food chai and without which no higher forms of life are i at alt. “Just thought I'd pass the bad news along. Doom still looms, I'm afraid. ESTATE ADMINISTRATION WILL PLANNING Royal Trust since 1899 SS8.
