ae C20 - Wednesday, December 2, 1981 - North Shore News it’s. fitting that Mollie Preece’s blood type if O-Rh. positive. It’s the type that, in an emergency, most people could accept without an adverse reaction. That's why it’s often called the universal donor. And if anyone in the Lower Mainland could be singled out as. a universal donor, it’s Preece, a 52 year old practical nurse at Nancouver General Hospital. Talk about giving of yourself. Most adult women have [0 to 12 pints of blood in their bodies. She has donated 141 ‘pints over the past 34 years. And that figure. is five pints more than Red Cross Society guidelines say she should. have been able to give. You must be 18 to give blood and you must limit donations to four annually. So, at 52, the maximum number of donations theoretically is 136. “She slipped in five extra somewhere along the line,” said Rick O’Brien, director of public relations for the BC-Yukon Division of the Red Cross. “We can. literally set our watches by Mollie. Every three months to the day she’s walking through the doors.” - “It’s true, I never miss. And I did go in'a few extra times when they called me in an emergency,” Preece said. “But at that time ‘they ‘weren't too particular about the three-month waiting peri What's more many more than 141 British Columbians are walking around with some of Preece’s blood coursing through their veins. That’s because today patients are rarely given whole blood. Instead, the ‘many \ unique gitttor blood is broken down into as many as five different _components and patients are only given the particular component they need. “The old phrase, ‘Give a pint and save a life,’ is outdated,” said O’Brien. “Nowadays one pint of blood probably affects four or five lives. “For example, we might take your platelets and give them to a leukemia patient to offset the effects of chemotherapy. We might take your albumin and give it to a burn victim to restore lost fluids. And we might take your Factor. 8 and give it to a hemophiliac to provide his blood with the clotting factor it doesn’t have.” With the simple logic of the truly charitable, Preece ° says she gives blood just for the feeling of satisfaction — that comes from helping people. ; The item most prominently displayed on | her living room wall is a framed plaque. It reads: The Canadian Red Cross Society has the honor to commend you for your gift of more than 100 donations of your blood. Your dedication and devotion over the years place you in a select group of Canadians who give of themselves so that others may live. You will never know how many have been saved but. you have the assurance that of your fellow Canadians owe life and health to you. “You could be saving a life, you know. That’s how I look at it,” she said. “And they’re always short of donors.” It’s a chronic problem. O'Brien said the Red Cross needs.to collect about 2,800 Haida Thermo Glass Takes the chills out of your late night viewing.
