390,000 of its new 1981

subcompact cars to check
for a carburetor defect that
could cause the engines to
run rough or stall.

The recall represents most
of the 1981 Ford Escort,
EXP, Mercury Lynx and
LN7 production through
June 12.

But Ford said Thursday it
does not view the carburetor
problem as a safety hazard.
