30 ~ North Shore News - Friday, June 23, 2000 enroad Rutledge races to first major win in Montreal LYNX Racing driver David Rutledge, 21, made a diamatic pass on the last turn of the last lap to win the fifth round of the 2000 Toyota Atlantic Championship Saturday afternoon at ine Air Canada Grand Prix. The 21-year-old West Vancouverite’s win, from the pole, ends a two-year drought for the championship-win- ning team, whose last victory was scored by Memo Gidley at Milwaukee in 1998. The result leaves Rutledge 4th in the championship points battle, but moves the first four to within a couple of points of each other and places him firmly in con- tention for the championship. “This is just about the biggest day of my life so far, {REM RERTICR A S E MAE HO certainly in racing,” says Rutledge, who also set a new fastest race Jao record of 1:35.945 for this event an his final trip around the track. “The Lynx team gave me an extremely good car, and I was lucky enough to be rac- ing with some really excellent drivers who were running clean and we were driving hard but giving cach other lots of racing room. We have a good handle on road course setups, which make up most of the rest of the season, so I think we should be a factor at every race and in the champi- onship,” Rutledge’s Lynx Racing teammate, Mike Conte, 31, of Seatcle, WA, qualified ‘12th on the grid ‘and drove an event-filled race to finish 8th, keeping alive his unbroken string of top-10 finishes. “ET think what happened here with my finish and David's win really will set the tone for the rest of the sea- son,” said Conte. Andrew Bordin, who fin- ished secand at Montreal, now leads the Atlantic dri- ver’s championship with 67 points while Dan Wheldon (who finished third) is second with 65. Buddy Rice, who led the championship coming into Montreal, dropped to third in the points being forced into early retirement when Bordin slid into him on the first turn of the first race lap. Rutledge is fourth in the standings with 60 points. In the Adiantic series, 20 points are awarded for 2 win. BCAA initialiy expressed concern about the levy last January because it is unfairly punitive to motorists who already bear the burden of provincial and federal gov- ernment fuel taxes. The levy is expected to average $75 and will be impicmented in 2001. Said John Ratel, BCAA director of government affairs, “This response could easily have been anticipated given recent attention to the levy in the media, and the number of calls we've received from members. Already half of what motorists pay at the gas pump goes to government, with virtually nothing given back in terms of national highway infrastructure improvements. “The vehicle levy is yer - another cross for the motorist to bear, and will hit hardest those who can afford it the least: single parent families, Jow income. earners, and 2000 Grand Vitara VG ; Ba Lease, : 2.9% No Limit Purchase Financing oS up to 24 months ~ o MS.RP.'24,890 ~ seniors on fixed incomes. Only 37% of those surveyed believe othe = TransLink Strategic Transportation Plan addresses the needs of motorists, while almost two- thirds view it as. addressing the necds of transit users. Overall, only half of those surveyed agree it will have a positive impact on traffic congestion. “The lack. of definitive commitment in the latter fig- ure comes as no surprise to BCAA, TransLink has freely stated that transit ridership is only expected to improve from the current 11% of daily commuter trips to 14%- by 2005,” added Ratel. “How can. that relieve traffic congestion when the overwhelming majority: of commuters will still be travei- ling by private vehicle in five Although BCAA members have insiicated they don’t want to pay for the TransLink _ years’ time?” initiatives, they do agree that ATTENTION!
