reunion for the Class of 1958.

‘S0s generation,’ according to
Patti (Kirstiuk) Howard, who is
co-chairing the event.

“The girls wore angora sweaters
back-to-front, the boys had
ducktail haircuts — and our
parents thought Elvis Presley was
disgusting when he came on the Ed
Sullivan show,”’ says Howard, a
former Delbrook cheerleader who
is now a mother of four.

“One of the leaders of the
Highland Rowdies Association us-
ed to cruise up and down in his
souped-up car — and today he is a
senior police officer. Actually, the
rowdiest thing they ever did was
soaping up store windows,”’ adds
Howard. : ,

‘The reunion is for everybody
who graduated from North Van
High or Delbrook in 1958, or
would have graduated if they
hadn’t changed schools or dropped
out, stressed co-chair Bill Wedley,
a professor of business administra-
tion at Simon Fraser University.

Whether they ended up atten-
ding Delbrook or North Van High,
all of those students have in com-
mon that they would have attended
Sutherland Jr. High beforehand.

Asked for favorite memories,
Rhelda Fromme wrote in that she
and Penny Fairburn were kept in
after class by Mr. Waite for having
written, ‘‘It is more profitable to
smile because crying doesn’t pay,’’
on their English textbooks. They
had to smile for Mr. Waite for a
hali an hour.

Mr. Waite is one of the teachers
who has been invited to attend the
classmates reception Friday at the
old Delbrook gym, chosen because
it is ‘the only thing left of the old
school,”’ says Howard.

“When Delbrook burned down
in 1977, it never reopened. And
North Van High closed and was
torn down two years later after it
was phased out,”’ adds Wedley.

On Saturday, a banquet and
‘dance. will be held at Canyon
-Gardens, where classmates and
their spouses can dance to tunes
