4 - North Shore News - Sunday, April 23, 2000 NV bus depot poliutes area, says GVRD Anna-Louise Pentland Contributing Writer COAST Mountain Bus Company is currently out of compliance with a waste discharge per- mit issued by the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD). The permit was issued in 1997 under a new GVRD system to dispose of waste water from the 3rd Street bus terminal in North Vancouver. “We have experienced regular exceedance of the oi! and grease amounts since that dme. “This facility is having problems meeting all of their permit limits for oil and grease and some metals,” Grant McGillivray, senior source control officer with the GVRD, said. While Coast Mountain is out of compli- ance, it is not subject to fines, The problem is not an easy one to fix. “Due to the nature of the waste water, it’s ard a very complicated problem. It would take several hun- dreds of thousands of doilars to correct. this problem,” MeGillivtas said. Any steps to solve the problem are stalled due to the possibility that the facility will be moved under TransLink’s North Shore Area Transit Plan. North Vancouver City Mavor Barbara) Sharp has advocated such a move. “Its probably just another exam- ple as to why the North Shore should be put on the high priority list for another depot. “It's in a residential area, there's almost twice as many buses as there should be, and the list goes on,” Sharp said. In his presentation to th city last Monday night, Bill Lambert, a program manager with TransLink, said a $300,000 study is being completed to look at the issue of the bus depot. Results of the study should be available in July. Coast Mountain Bus Company is a wholly owned dialogue ‘Council Matters subsidiary of TransLink. In the meantime, the bus company is looking for inter- int measures to deal with the problem. "We are aware there are some compliance issues at the North Vancouver depot,” said Ken Hardy, spokesman for TransLink. “We've proposed to take some interim steps to get somewhat into compliance, but not completely. 1t would take an investment of approx: imately $900,000 in’ waste Water treatment equipment to get fully in compliance. “We have proposed to spend $200,000 to get it down, and if the deport will stay on the site, we'll spend the rest of the money.” Waste water does not directly affect. the safety of drinking water.
