FOR years the Squamish Nation has been fighting
to receive fair compensation for land in Kitsilano
it says was taken from it by the provincial govern-
ment in 1913.

For years, the same North
Shore native band has been
ignoring, denying and paper-
shuffling — individual Ind
claims made by its very own
people, says at least onc
Squamish Nation member.

“Here we are, going into a
new millennium, and we arc in
the same place now thar we
were then,” said Wendy
Lockhart-Lundberg last week-
end as she sat in her
Richmond kitchen, sorting
through documents, letters,
scrapbooks and photos relat-
ing to her family. “Except
now, instead of being treated
badly by the Canadian govern-
ments, it’s our own chicts and
council. And they are using
the same flawed logic that was
used back then: ‘The Indians are stupid and ignorant, so we have
to make all their decisions for them.”

For several years, Lockhart-Lundberg has been fighting on
behalf of her mom, Nona Lockhart.

Nona was the only child of the Squamish Nation’s Henry
“Hawkeye” Baker — called Hawkeye because of his exceptional
skill blocking goals in the lacrosse net for the North Shore
Indians.

“He was almost invincible, he was considered the most valu-
abic player i in the league,” ssid Lockhart-Lundberg proudly.

She keeps memories of his athletic carcer isi < plastic storage

But when Hawkeye died in 1968 — one ycar after his wife

efforts on behalf of Canada meant little. The two pieces of prop-
