Parents oF Kindergarten children at Plymouth clemen- tary school are the latest to tind themselves the unwitting vie- tiaw of a funding shortage thar’s hit the North Vancouver school district like a whirlwind, leaving days of debris in’ its wake. Cathy Babington, whose son Matthew has: just) started Kindergartes: at Plymouth, said that kindergarten children: are being taught by a substitute because there is no money tora full-time teacher. “They had the job posted, bui they took the notice down,” she said. “Now this (substitute) tcscher doesn’t know front one day to the next whether shell be coming in to work, so she hast brought any materials in.” -PONTIAC BUICK © CADILLAC. “CADILEAC 1989 Pontiac Trans ; Sport : 4dr ext, brand new, 7 pass, van, Keyless, p/windows, locks, tilt, dee Unt Paes security age, luggage rack & much more. It was only on Wednesday -- over a week inte the start of tera —- that they were given name: lags, and so far they have done no class) werk other than sketching with paper and pen- cil. The substitute teacher: is abo supervising a large class: she has 24 children in her care. “Pye talked to parents who've had older kids go through the public school sys- tem and they're floored hy this.” Babington said.” What has parents niost upset, Babington says, is that they've been given ne informa: tion by the school about the situation. As a result, some parents are being forced to reconsider their allegiance to the public school system. “Es the first ume Ive had contact with the Canadian edu- cation system,” said Alice Siu, whose daughter Jacqueline is also encolled in’ Plymouth's kindergarten class. Her friends told her to send Jacqueline to a private school, bar “PE wanted to bring her ep in the public system,” Siu said, “0 make her hike everyone else: areal Canadian.” Siu is disappointed with Meymouth, which she had been tohd was a good school, “hey can do daycare, not education” she said. Another parent, who asked not to be named, said she was feeling “complete frustration.” The woman said her daugh- ter was struggling to under- stand why there was nothing on the walls of her classroom, and no name above fier coat hook, “Evervthing’s been put on hold.” she said. “We may look inte other options — bur Plymouth is a community school, and it's pare of the rea- son we moved into the ricigh- bourhaod.” “Pye already looked iato private schools,” Cathy Babington said. “We don't have the money, but 1} don't have a choice. Killeen said the school board would now be “proceed- ing on the basis that we won't be getting any funding. Although that could change.” “There's alot of anxiety out there, and rightly so,” he “said. “It's a reality that has no solu- tion, unless the government does something.” Killeen was unable to specu- late about the staffing situation at Plymouth elementary. Administrative staff at the school declined to comment. VIENOd' * JIND 36 month lease, $3,300 DP + 1st security + taxes O.A.C. as $26,159 + Ist st secunity + + taxes OAC.
