Increase
SPEED limits cn more
than 2,300 kilometres
of highways in British
Columbia will be
increased this month
as part of the second
phase of the speed
limit review.

According to B.C.
Transportation and Highway
Minister Lois Boone,

increase posted speed limits
from 90 km-h to 100

on about 1,870 kilometres of

highways

Meanwhile, nacarly 460
kilometres will change from
80 km-h to 90 kim-h.

In the first phase last vear,
speed limits were increased
on approximately 2,000 kilo-
meus of road.

“Under the second phase,
ministry staff reviewed the
remainder of provincial high-
ways to determine if ir was
safe to increase speed,”
Boone said.

“Changes will be made
on 18 routes based on the
accident history, if the road
alignment allows for the
higher speed and the majori-
ty of drivers are travelling, at
that speed.”

The minister added the
speed limti review conducted
by her ministry Was done in
close consultation with the
province’s — municipaliti
regional — districts, rural
MLAs, police, highway
regional and district offices
and stakeholders such as
BCAA and ICBC.
