cities THE MOTOR Vehicle Act (MVAjis a fairly thorough book of rules that supposedly _ govern our driving habits, thereby ensuring the safe and. . smooth flow of traffic. _ Shaun Conlin It was‘and is written by. women “and men and is constantly undergo- ing subtle and/or drastic changes. It is neither perfect nor complete _ but it tries. ; . Some parts of the Act. seem to be ; overwritten, wordy babble — it takes three or four reads to find tue’ . meaning. Rarely. There are several curious rules that are worth mentioning simply because they are, well, curious: .. Section 164 of the MVA tells us not to follow another vehicle too closely. Fair enough, but part of Subsection 3 attempts to define suffi- cient spacing between cars as “to enable a vehicle to enter and occupy » that space without danger.” I fear this to be an overboard interpretation; some drivers may infer that they can cut you off and believe you to be at fault for not leaving enough elbow room. Skateboards, rofler-skates and roller-blades were, at one point in time, considered to be a “cycle.” that is, a device having wheels und pro-- pelled by human power. This is no longer so. In fact there is no longer any definition of a roller-blade, skate or skateboard at all in the MVA. Section 203 states that a person shall not-“drive furiously a horse or other animal ona highway.” And you thought it was sage to strap a saddle on your cat and “drive” it furiously, down to the grocery store. Strangely, some things one would think to be important are not . addressed by the MVA at all. Nowhere in the Act is a Four- | .Way-Stop addressed. Stop signs are defined, as are Two-Way-Stops. The generally accepted rule of “first * come, first to go” is based purely on common sense; there is no law say- ing it must be so.
