Tim Bell FILM REVIEW Ed Wood *** (Touchstone) Rated Mature (at Famous Piayers and the Varsity cinemas) Back in the Fifties, there were only two men in Hollywood wie wrote, directed, produced and starred in their films, One was Orson Welles. The other was not. Although the end results were not Citizen Kane, Edward D. Wood Jr. (Johnny Depp) shared most of his idol’s problems in getting his * vision up on the big screen. Both faced a lack of funds, no time, and interfering backers. But his blind enthusiasm and love for movies overcame all obstacles. All except one — an acute absence of talent. Ed Wood made films that were 50 inept, they glowed. If actors lumbered into walls or kicked over the cardboard grave- stones, it didn’t matter. First takes were always, “Perfect.
