The boys return with perfect Lethal blend

Lethal Weapon 3 * # * (Warner Bras.) Rated R (at the Capitol,
Espianade and other Famous Players cinemas)

OPE, MEL doesn’t bare his butt in this one (we do

see him in his underpants, though). However, LW3

does have more of the running, jumping, smash-
‘em-up thrills and spills that we've all come to know and
love threugh the twin barrels of Lethal Weapons 1 and 2.

After a slight miscalculation that
reduced an office building to rub-
ble, Riggs and Murtaugh (Mel Gib-
son, Danny Glover) find
themselves back as flatfoots cat-
ching jaywalkers. But not for long.

One hair-raising chase later,
they immediately redeem
themselves with only marginal
endangerment to the public and
uncover a major gun theft.

The slick-haired mastermind is
Jack Travis (Stuart Wilson), a
former cop who went bad,
degenerating into land develop-
ment and gun-running.

But the loose cannons aren't all
on the streets. Riggs gets a twinkle
in his wild eyes when he pairs up
with Lethal Weaponette Sgt. Lorna
Cole (Rene Russo), a kickboxing

Internal Affairs officer assigned to
crack the case.

At last he has someone to com-
pare battle scars with (a funny
scene originated by Robert Shaw
and Richard Dreyfuss in jaws).

The chemistry between Mel and
Danny just gets better and better.
And when the two of them team
up with Joe Pesci (back as Leo
Getz with an astonishing blond
hairdo), it rivals the Three Stouges
{and | mean that sincerely.)

Director Richard Donner’s
perfect blend of banter and
breakneck action scenes tops the
previous Lethal Weapons and
preps you for the inevitable LW4.

One star. Like Porky Pig says,
“That's all, folks!’ And that’s
more than what it deserves.

Here’s why.

lon Aldrich (Tom Selleck) has
been so busy career-climbing on
Wall Street that he hasn’t bothered
to keep tabs on his parents. In fact,
he wouldn't recognize his own fa-
ther. But then it’s mutual.

Dad (Don Ameche) has to be
teiniroduced to his son about
every 15 minutes (sound funny
yet?). Pop also has trouble dress-
ing, burns down his house and
drives his prize ‘74 Caddy
backwards in crowded areas. Ah

es, the lighter side of senile
dementia.

When Jon takes his mom (Anne
Jackson) and his ever-grinning fa-
ther home, Dad’s antics lead to all

sorts of “slapstick” pandemo-
nium that nearly blinds, cripples
and emasculates his son.

As if physical damage isn’t hilar-
ious enough, Jon loses his lovely
wite, wondertui kids, perfect
apartment, fulfilling job and fragile
sanity. Then there’s Jon’s sister
(Christine Ebersole), who eggs him
on to kill their parents for the in-
surance,

Folks is a joyless, puerile embar-
rassment with a couple of
bankable names. Even the releas-
ing company (20th Century Fox)
doesn’t have its familiar fanfare
trumpeting the beginning of this
film. Who can blame them?
