Frozen turkey
drumsticks a
budget beater

1 CAN see only one use for
winter: without it, we
wouldn’t recognize spring.

It's 5:30 a.m. and I'll swear that
the only other person in the world
who is up at this hour is the bus
driver who gunned his engine on
our hill and is responsible for me
being awake.

Our elderly tomcat is convinced
my ankles might freeze (the hour
before dawn isn’t just the darkest,
it’s the coldest}.

Timmy has wrapped himself
across my feet and over my ankles,
covering the bare spot between the
track suit and the fuzzy slippers.

If one has to be up at this hour
there’s no better company than a
cat. Timmy neither howls at the
front door to go walkies nor at the
fridge for growlies. He’s warm, he
purrs and he doesn’t ask silly ques-
dons.

It’s not so bad, this carly morn-
ing stint at the typewriter. The
phone doesn’t ring. No other chore
is clamoring to be done — the

stores don’t open for hours, and
Brian would oe a bit distressed if I
used any major appliance.

There are so many hours left in
today that, if ! had to, I could do
almost anything. I could complete
my entire Christmas shopping list.

If 1 chose, I could prepare and
freeze every item on my menu for
the holidays or [| could paint the
bedroom.

By tonight, | could be in Lon-
don if that’s where I wanted to go.

The world is a very simple place
to be — until the rest of the world
wakes up.

Shopping hint of the week
department: Watch for Brussels
sprouts on branches. Save-On-
Foods had them last week at $1.23
for about a yard of sprouted
branch. They are simply
marvellous.

The sprouts are uniform size —
small and tender. Since yau pick
them as you need them, they re-
quire no paring -— just snap them
off the branch.

They keep very well — I set my
branch in a jug of cold water and
set it outside on my _ sundeck
(sprouts like the cold). We have
had two generous servings for four
from the supply and there’s still
enough left for one meal.

Another hint: If you bought the
frozen turkey drumsticks, featured
last week at Stong’s, try this: My
package cost $2.63 and contained
four huge legs.

1 simmered the frozen mass in
my stockpot until the legs separat-
ed and were semi-cooked. Then |
