Jacquie Bjornson, chairman of the North Shore branch of St. John Ambulance, hopes her val- unteer organization can raise $35,000 by Dec. 31 to replace the present vehicle, which she says is on its last legs. “I'm thrilled about the con- tributions so far,’’ Bjornson says about the campaign kick-off by the Legion and Kiwanis. The new mobile first aid post would have all the modern conve- niences necessary to provide initial first aid care and shelter to such groups as soccer and little league hockey and at community events where there would otherwise not be access to emergency help. The unit would include a generator to provide light, since electricity is not available where such a unit has to operate. “Our old van is dying,’’ Bjorn- son said of the "60s-vintage Dodge postal truck which already had a at Carmelo Restaurant quarter of a million miles on it when it came into her hands in 1982. ‘‘It’s no longer cost effec- tive, because it is increasingly ex- pensive to keep on the road.”” Bjornson tells the story of how the back bumper once fell off in the middle of an intersection and how the staff calmly pasted it back on using triangular bandages. The old van, which -was pur- chased with a $4,000 gift from Kiwanis, has allowed the staff to treat 1,200 patients in six years, with injuries ranging from slivers in fingers to broken legs and spinal cord damages. Bjornson said the staff at Dave Buck Ford deserve special credit for keeping the old van repaired and running. Any person or organization con- tributing more than $5,000 to the campaign will be commemorated by a decal on the new mobile unit. Donatious, which are tax-deduc- tible, will be accepted by the St. John Ambulance North Shore of- fice in Room 111, 2132 Hamilton Street, North Vancouver V7P 2M3. For more information call 984-3475.
