SeaBus to celebrate its 10th anniverasry THE SEABUS is 10 years old this summer. Opened in 1977, the cross-inlet SeaBus carries an average 13,000 to 14,000 riders on a summer day. With a capacity of 400, the two SeaBuses have a peak limit of a whopping 3,200 passengers an hour. Much of the success of SeaBus stems from its floating terminals adjusting «:itomatically to possible 5Y-metre tide changes to easily handle passengers in large numbers quickly and efficiently. Each terminal is in the shape of an “‘E” with two ferry slips; with berths, ramps, waiting areas and service offices, each facility oc- cupies 20,000 square feet of covered area. Enterins; and exitireg passengers are completly segre- gated through specially designed loading/unloading systems. Passenger control at the termi- nals is maintained through staff- operated mechanical gates. A self-serve fare system is in effect, and staff maintain security surveillance through strategically- located video cameras. The SeaBus’ objective is to pro- vide a marine rapid-transit service. Designers looked for light con- struction, e2se of loading, high levels of maneuverability and stability —- and for fast turn- arounds. The result was a double-ended catamaran, built of light aluminum with four diesel engines with the ability to turn in its own length. Maneuverability was a key fac- tor in the design. Two independent drive systems allow the vessel to be moved forwards, backwards, | sideways, diagonally or crabwise, giving SeaBus the ability to stop in its own length. The double-ended and independent drive systems , allow either end to become bow or stern at will. Viith a master and a crew of three, a SeaBus vessel operates across Burrard Inlet at a current cruising speed of !2 knots, com- pleting the 1.75-nautical-mile crossing in 12 minutes. This speed with a three-minute turn-around accommodates SeaBus service every 15 minutes. Because of the separate flow- through handling facilities both on board and ashore, 400, passengers disembark and another 400 board — all within 90 seconds. Running from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. the next day, the vessels make 80 trips a for Father’s Day... e Pipes | e Pipe Stanas e Cigars e Tobacco Cigar Pouches Lighters Key Chains atc.. #3 Alexander St. Gastown Harbour Centre 687-4136 669-9731 Job Finder Classified Ads.
