22 - Friday, August 8, 1986 - North Shore ‘ews Home & Garden ___ Tree Talk By Brian Fisher THE MOST destructive element in tree care in the Lower Mainland is man. Weather runs a distant second. Few people realize the true value of their trees and shrubs and the importance of proper maintenance. The number one probiem caus- ing destroyed trees is neeleet, Trees left without any pruning, maintenance or care for a iong time usually develop problems. These include disease, broken limbs, height) problems and the blotting out of the sun. When this happens, it is often too late to do anything other than fo remove the tree. Of the more than 200 tree and pruning ‘service’ firms available in the Lower Mainland, probably less than 20 know anything at all about trees. Many are tree climbers and chainsaw operators, ‘toppers’, some are “loggers’', others are “gardeners” who ‘‘prune™’ in the off season, so the tree and Jand- scape industry provide a fair share of the abuse. In addition, despite a protifera- tion of good books and instruction that is available, many household- ers seem to ‘have av’ their trees with a vengeance, but, without knowledge or skill. The reason for this indulgence in poor tree work by oneself. or for the hiring of the unskilled and un- qualified to do the work is to save money. Many people get several quotes for tree work and then go with the cheapest, revardless of their qualifications. Very often, what is believed to be saving money is in fact ruining trees. Your trees and shrubs are very valuabie, they add beauty, and value to your home and garden. Many would just not be replace: able if they were destroyed or died. Before you ‘tdo’* your trees o7 shrubs yourself, invest some time and money in books or instruction. Before you have them ‘done’ be sure the workmen know what they are doing.
