A comprehensive community needs assessment conducted eartier this year made the picture a little clearer. Both exercises showed that al- though many services exist for youth, the service delivery system is in need of some fine tuning. To ease youth access to ap- propriate resources, words are be- ing turned to action by a Grade 12 Windsor Secondary School stu- dent, a ‘‘substance abuse specialist’? working locally with the YIPES (Youth Intervention and Prevention Education Ser- vices) program, the local Boys’ and Girls’ Club and the North Shore Volunteer and Information Centre. The plan is to produce a North Shore youth pages directory for 12 to 19-year-olds. The directory will include information on the various local services available to young people. Similar directories are already available in Richmond and Bur- naby, Said YIPES member Jo-Anne Lauzer, ‘‘What we're looking at doing is going through the peer counsellors who are in the schools and getting them to distribute them (directories) to the classrooms. So it increases ex- posure to the peer counselling program and gives them (students) a viable service and directory. “We'd also like to access the kids who are not at school so we'll be having the youth workers SALE ENDS JULY 6/91 DUNBAR 4. 30th.» DUNDAFIAVE, WEST.
