The real solution is an education in tolerance Dear Editor: I wonder if the neophyte law- makers in Victoria and their tutors, the senior civil servants, have given thought fo the eventual ramifications of putting teeth into implementing Bill 33% Firstly, who is going to select the Star Chamber judges and what will be their qualifications? Just as: important, who will select the selectors and what will be their qualifications? Secondly, will the transgressors be confined to only those using the English language or will it encompass French, Cantonese, Urdu, Mandarin, Farsi, German, halian, Spanish, etcetera? {n other words, will we all be equal under this ukase or does it only apply. to those using the ma- jority language (at that moment anyway) in this Province? Thirdly, how on earth does one define hate? Sure, if one hears or reads something which apparently ‘ harshly. criticises oneself, one’s family or one’s people, injustly, it can cut to the quick and-hurt. Nevertheless, much of what some regard as hate is merely the expression of antipathy or dislike or distaste for some aspect of bad Manners or arrogance or intoler- “ance exhibited by an individual, or justly or. group of individuals, within a race of people but it is not a blanket condenmation of that entire race, $ would be the first to admit that | actively dislike certain peo- ple of my own race and I am sure not every one of them loves me. If I gave vent to my detestation in an active manner their dislike could well escalate into hate on both sides, and who would then have instigated that hate? If t direct those same prejudices towards certain members of other traces | would then be accused of racial hate. When one is a target of such prejudice the real solution is educ:.tion in telerance, a sense of humor and the strength of mind to know that the attack emanates from ignorance and weakness. Finally, one must ask why Doug Collins seems to generate so much hate mail? His facts are always accurate, so what then is their problem? , His delightful use of irony, teasing and general leg-pulling and mild exaggeration to em- phasise his point of view seems to pass completely over their heads. But then: fanatics never have had a sense of the ridiculous, have they? : Ken Block West Vancouver Tale of two mothers a terrifying story mdeed. -Dear Editor: Oh, ‘dear, poor Craig Binion, getting so hot and bothered by the “Yess than 1%, of 1%’ (please quote your social research sources, ~.Mr. .
