WO Pradas, Sped 29) 188s : . : . . 7 . 2 ‘ - Beaver Lumber convinces NV council to rezone land AFTER MONTHS of bickermnp, several deferrals and ane, clear rejection, Beaver lumber finally vince enough council members to rezone its land to allow North Stare News 5 additional retail space and much-needed parking. Council recentiy voted 4-2 to overturn a March 7 motion rere: , ting Beaver’s application, and then approved a mation initating the _bezoning process far four lots beside Beaver Lumber. Aldermen Frank Morris, dohin Braithwaite and Barbara Sharp were opposed. Ald. Bill Bell said he favored the mation, although he also wants to preserve industrial land because the property is already being used for a non-industrial purpose and Beaver would face unfair competi- tion from neighboring businesses if the application were rejected. “Somewhere deep down it doesn’t seem fair that’ a thriving business that needs fo grow and is there, gets this turned down. | can't see putting Mr. Allen into a situation’ where his business can't grow and can't thrive,’’ said Bell.. .The application has been before council several ‘times since. Dec. 8. and Allen has faced .a barrage of questions and insinuations from. opposing aldermen at. least four times. ’ For Allen, the approval means he may be able to enlarge his park- ing facilities and legally operate a drive through service for building . materials on the lots adjacent to the main store. It also means he will be able to compete effectively with Hollyburn Lumber across the street which has zoning permitting the outdoor retail area, | But for Ald. Frank Morris and John’ Braithwaite, the decision means a -further crosion of in- dustrial Jand in the city and in- ercased traffic on the Jower level road. It also is another example of council making concessions for businesses on this property. .” “$ can't help but feel frustrated when | hear council members talk- éng about fairness and flexibility, but. also that industrial ‘land is nearly sacred,"’ said : Braithwaite. “l Jook back on Park and Tilford and we’ also heard: about fairness and flexibility then.’ In late 1987, the former council, voted to rezone part of the industrial-zoned land of Park and Tilford for commercial use.
