Only recently have these areas been partially cleaned up. Council wants the province to make good on its past promis- es. Some progress has been made, but che entire issue is still a long wav from being resolved. Boulevard parks and greenspace remain one of the hottest issues in all three city districts. The city’s six pas and five all-weather fields are In 199], the city needed seven more playing fields. Today that number has risen to 13 and ts projected to tise to 16 fields by the year 2000. Tae Grand Boulevard currently area hosts 22 soc- cer games a week on a field designed for no more than six. In total, it’s estimated that there is about one field, per 3,800 residents, compared with one field per 3,100 residents in North Vancouver District. A recent decision to develop the Cloverly area’s Sunrise Park inte a soccer field was opposed by area residents who were determined to preserve the tield vast of Haywood Avenue, south of Lions Gate stu- dios and adjacent to Park and Tiltord shopping cen- tre. The site has been the topic of much controversy as proposals for everything trom a parking lor and storage facility to golf range have been considered and rejected.
