NOT SO many years ago, spring was generally recommended as the ideal time for planting trees, shrubs, evergreens and herbaceous perennials. Then, several decades ago, fall was strongly promoted as a good time to transplant many deciduous plants and some evergreens. With modern technology, though, the planting season has been extended even further. Most trees and landscape plants can now be planted at any time of the year the soil can be worked. Advances in the transport and care of trees and shrubs from their growing location to the yard have made this progress possible. Many of the trees and other living plants you want began their life in con- tainers, so there is no ‘‘shock’’ when they are moved from the growing field to retail nursery then to your landscape.
