On the morning Wallis was to
give her first performance with the
Vancouver Opera in 1985, her ail-
ing mother was rushed to the in-
tensive care unit and died of
cancer four months Jater.

When her husband-violinist
Gerald Jarvis then announced that
he was leaving the Vancouver
Symphony Orchestra to play in
Japan for what they knew would
be an extended separation, the
West Vancouver mezzo-soprano
plunged into a depression that
lasted nearly wo years.

i “You really grow up when a

: parent lies," Wallis, a stunning
woman of 44 with dark, silver-
whisped hair, says in a soft Essex
accent. “I've become very philo-
sophical about life since my
mother died.”

Speaking with Wallis, one can
sense that new persnective — that
she’s both sadder and wiser.

Two years ago when her world
was falling apart, Wallis lost all in-
teres? in singing. The performances
dwindled and it hurt her career.
Now, buoyed by a new-found in-
ner strength, she’s ready to make a
comeback.

“You have to believe in
yourself very strongly to be able to
stand up and do it (sing.) “I'm
very content with myself after my
‘nervous breakdown,’ °’ she
laughs.

“At first when Gerald left it was
awful — now, I’m used to it.
suppose | could have gone with
him, but | would have had to give
up my Career, Ittook quitea
bashing anyway, looking after a
home and two kids.

“I've always thought isn’t this
great? I’ve been able to do bath
(have a family and maintain a ca-
reer), but then maybe 1 haven't
done either very well,’’ she says.

“What I've learned from this is
that you can get so dependent on
your partner that you cease to
