Beware. There are more traffic fatalities in the waning dog- days than at any other time ofthe year (Christmas-time is second). Statistically speaking, summer — and especially the Labor Day long weckend -— is the most dangerous time for motorists. “There are more traffic fatalities in the waning dog- days chan at any other time of the year.” As you might surmise, drinking-driving stats also peak as the summer kicks and sputters to its ultimate demise, making way for the soggy, lethargic, why-bother- celebrating days of autumn malaise. With this foreknowledge, it’s unlikely that those plan- ning one last road trip are going to cancel plans just because some back page traf- fic columnist warns of higher potential for impending doom. So, all I can do is pass along is a bit of road-trip advice: 1. Don’t be a bonehead. You’ve at least the newly- acquired knowledge about increased road risk, so don’t multiply the hazards by motoring about like a thick- skulled road warrior. Take your time. Reiss. Enjoy the trip. Getting there is half the fun (getting home is about 05% of the fur, but $ some comfort in knowing that you get home alive in the end). - 2. Dan’t drink and drive. Remember, you are morz likely to be hit by a drunk driver in the sunny season when the colle: enchant to party override se bility of sobriety (while motoring).
