— Sunday, May 24, 1998 — North Shore News Mary Segal Contributing Writer MANY of us, as we get older, are finding that we are not able to drive. “We may have arthiitis or other problems that make it difficult to get in and out of a car. Our eyesight may be fail- ing. Or our doctor may have said to us, “don’t drive ar - night,” or “you” ll have to give up driving altogether.” When this happens, we have a problem. I don’t need to tell you that we five on a hillside, which is lovely to look az bur hard to walk on unless we are very fit. A lot of North Shore resi- deatial areas dey nat have side- walks. So there are two options: we can ask friends or family members to giveeus a ride or we can take the bus. Riding with a friend is pleasant, bur let's face it, many ‘of our friends are also unakic to drive. The Seniors’ Hub (988-7115) in North Vancouver, and the West Vancouver Special Services to Seniors - (925- 7281). Both have volunteer dri- vers who will pick up and deliver you to your destina- tion, However, these services are limited because of the shortage of drivers available. -Introducing:, “= ° Lightweight plastic © Virtuaily ‘clear indoors -Transitions/ | ” BONUS OFFER LENSES j5e . The other option is, of course, the bus. Many of us get around quite well by BC Transit or the West Van Blue Bus, especially if we live on a bus route and our destination is also near a bus stop. However, many of -us live several blocks away from a stop, and we may wish to visit somcone who is equally isolat- ed. If you want to go from West Van :o North Van, or vice versa, forget it.
