SUN, sand and surf three clements of serious summer fun
have been given a serious second look, over the years, making
a day at the beach fess carefree than it used to be, Twenty
years ago North Shore beaches large and small were packed
with sunbathers and swimmers alike; but in 1997 sun-wor-
shippers are a dying breed, and due to pollution and high col-

waves, Only 34% said they would feel safe taking the plunge,
and in a survey taken last summer 79% sald they were con-
cerned about the safery of local beaches. Everything, from
construction near creeks and heavy rains to a large flock of geese can contribute to high
coliform counts on our beaches. North Shore Health regularly publishes the numbers
throughout the summer, making your decision to stink or swim a little caster,
