Sinterklaas beats Santa to

Holland celebrates the birthday
of Sinterklaas, the Dutch Santa
Claus, who brings gifts to the
children who behaved well and
takes the naughty children with
him back to Spain.

Sinterklaas with his long white
beard, his red mantle and mitre
arrives by steamboat from Spain
mid-November.

He is accompanied by his playful
companions, the Moorish Peters,
Zwarte Pieten, who are dressed: in

doublet and hose and carry birch
rods to symbolize Sinterklaas’ strick
side and goodies to symbolize his
kindness.

Sinterklaas is welcomed by thou-
sands of children singing Sinterklaas
sangs, ‘This year Sinterklaas arrived
in Doesburg, in the province of
Gelderland and most other towns
and cities in Holland on Nov, 1.
