32 ~— Friday, December 16, 1994 - ONE RECENT weekend was “another Grey Cup weekend, “the 82nd Grey Cup weekend in the history of the event. This particular event had the B.C. Both teams underwent similar hardships, both scemed to be the ‘underdogs in the semi-final games and they both had fairly decent sea- sons, Most people I spoke. with said. that they just could not get as excited ‘about the Grey Cup. Could this pos- sibly be because it is only one game rather than a series? Perhaps only after three or four really exciting games is it possible for a group of people, who aren't sports fans, to get behind their team and rally them to a victory or at least a'second place finish. Perhaps Vancouver is a hockey ‘town and people just aren’t as inter- - ested in football. I find this reasoning doubtful as ‘I’m sure a large percentage of the people who were downtown for the Canucks riot were not, in fact, hock- : ey fans. ‘One impression | got was that people just didn't seem to think the Canadian Football League (CFL) was as worthy a league as say the National Football League (NFL). - People seem to feel that the games are not as exciting as those in the American-based league. ‘ This is a shame, as the players in ‘the CFL are busting their butts for only.a fraction of the salary the players in the NFL make. .' . These are the athletes who truly “ love the game.
