always the better, more reliable
solution.

A peony ring is simply two or
three metal stakes, 24 to 30 inches
in length, positioned in the ground
around the plant,

A wire hoop is attached at the
top to support the arching stems
18 to 20 inches above the ground.

Container-grown peonies can be
planted at any time of the year as
long as they are properly watered
afterwards,

Those that are sold packaged or
bare-roat should be transplanted
in the fall or early in spring.

Plant them at such a level as to
ensure that the eyes or growth
buds are within one inch of the
soil surface.

Old, overcrowded specimens
should be divided in the fall; some

time around the middle of
November is best.

Understand that peonies do not
like to have their roots disturbed
and will usually not Mower for the
next two to four years. So do nol
divide them too frequently.

Soils should be enriched and
well cultivated to a depth of 18
inches before planting.

Choose a site that has full sun
or at least some sun-dappled
shade.

I have seen plants thriving in
full shade, but that is not the
preferred environment.

Established plants should be fed
with liberal amounts of bonemeal
in the fall and again, lightly, in
mid-spring.

The occasional shot of a
water-soluble fertilizer such as
15-30-15 or 20-20-20 would do
wonders when applied during the
growing season.

Do not pull spent stalks out af
the ground during your fall
cleanup. Instead, carefully cut
them slightly below the soil line,
taking extra precautions not to cut
in 1o the eye or growing crown on
the root.

Some named varieties of her-
baceous peonies to look for would
be:

Whites: Festiva Maxima

Pinks: Sarah Bernhardt, Kelway’s
Lovely, Bowl of Beauty

Reds; Defender, King Arthur,
Rubra Plena, Sunshine

Some of the species forms to
look for would include
miokosewitschii (yellow), smouthii
(red), and arfetina (pink).

I’m sure that if you give a few
of these old garden standards a
try you will become aware of the
reason why they became so popu-
lar in the first place,

Great Lawn at VanDusen
Botanical Garden during the
Midsummer’s Eve Celebra-

The Society for Creative

Anachronism will present an even-
ing of medieval! skills and fun.
Musicians will play courtly
music while archers test their
accuracy and the ladies and
gentlemen of the Lions Bay Court

will invite participation in  tradi-
tional dances.

The baron of Lions Gate and
his lady will preside over the
festivities.

The knights in armor battling
with heavy swords and the fencing
contests are always a_ favorite
entertainment with children.

The contest ring will be located
at the top of the Great Lawn.

The Elizabethan Hedge Maze at
the gardens is a popular puzzle for

all ages. It contains 1,000 individ- —

ual cedars in a circular pattern.
Surrounding the maze, the

seven-acre Alma VanDusen
Perennial Garden will also be in
full bloom.

Hs bold design combines the
elements of both a targe her-
baceous border and a wild mead-
ow, complete with a_ babbling
brook and two ponds.

Regular garden admission is $9
