Wednesday, February 5, 1992 - Nerth Shore News MONEY MATTERS 30 - Mike Grenby offers plain language advice on money matters From page 22 ing with general reporting, Grenby was to pioneer the Sun’s money column and syndicate it nationally before leaving. “I was one of the first (finan- cial columnists), and the first na- tionally syndicated one — nobody wrote about rnoney.”” Grenby’s financial advising company started in 1973 with his column, and branched out into personal consultations in 1978. Freelance financial planning kept Grenby going through some of the eight-month strikes that Pacific Press experienced during _his tenure, he said. In 1986 he ieft the Sun to con- centrate on his business, earning the designations of Registered Fi- nancial Planner in 1987 and Chartered Financial Planner in 1988. He stresses the fact that he is completely independent and does not benefit from the sales of any financial products. Not only does he not self any himself, he has refused to accept gratuities from companies offering him a payment whenever one of Grenby’s clients buys from them, he said. That independence is very im- portant to him because his clients can be sure that they are getting impartial advice. In fact, Grenby gives every client a disclosure statement guaranteeing that in- dependence. The two main reasons clients come to an adviser is tax savings and investment planning, Grenby said. $36,582 “How do they manage to do it?” ATRIMARK MUTUAL FUNDS initial $10,000 Investment WE MANAGE. Even for his own financial planning, Grenby says he consults his accountant — often just to get a second opinion. And some of his clients know what they want to do before stepping in the door. People who can’t afford to pay an adviser can get free or inex- pensive advice through books and newspapers or through pro- fessionals — bankers, insurance egents and stock brokers — who are selling a product but can still offer some sound advice. Asked the difference tetween 4 personal fiancial adviser and an accountant, Grenby said ‘‘I speak English.”’ He added that while many ac- countants wiil specialize in one field, financial planners will look at your overall picture. Your finaacial adviser will do tax planning, giving you advice on how to save on taxes, but he will not actually do your taxes. An ac- countant will.
