Arts Club Theatre: The Club. A musical that focuses On an ex: Music reflects respect for all ethnic traditions From page 26 doesn’t come asa surprise to Guzman, who has been perform. ing since he was nine. But he isn’t getting swept away with visions of stardom. “You're probably going to ask me what the goals of Ancient Cultures are, Well, | don’t know,” he says, preferring to take a wait- and-see attitude. Guzman leans back in his chair and yawns widely. He’s just finished a busy day at CBC radio, where he works as an associate producer, While he’s serious about performing, he likes the idea of maintaining two distinct ca- reers. “Music,”’ he says, “was always a hobby for me because | had my career in business ad- ministration. | always played for free in Chile, but | started to feel like | needed something else. Music wasn’t my dream at that age — it was always a curiosity. Then | started to get into it and couldn't quit. | thought folk music has no end —- you start with a traditional composition and turn it into a contemporary form.’ This “hobby” took him through South America, Mexico and eventually to Canada. Guz- man believes it was his destiny to end up in Vancouver. “twas on holidays in Mexico for the 1986 World Soccer Cup, and | met the right people at the right time. We were joking — they asked me if I'd ever been to Canada, and | said no. Then | started thinking about it and the next thing | knew | had a landed immigrant application form in my hand.” In Vancouver Guzman hooked up with Cortez and the two began performing as a duo, but almost exclusively to Latin audiences. In 1988 they were offered a gig at the Calgary Winter Olympics and were forced to come up with a name. One thing led to the next. At one of their concerts they met Sandra Routledge, who offered to manage them. “I told them that they needed to target their audience because they had the potential to build a huge audience,” says Routledge. “So they asked me if | could help them. We printed some business cards , got together a promotional kit and started promoting curselves. We've played all the major B.C. festivals since then.” Guzman has been adding new members to his group at a rate of about one a year. The band is now composed of Guzman, Cortez, Guatamalan Fito Garcia, Mex- ican-born Carlos Galindo and Chileans Alberto San Martin and Angel Araos. Guzman plays the Spanish guitar, the charango (a small guitar made from the shell of an ar- madillo), cuatro (a four-stringed instrument from Venezuela), tiple dike a dulcimer, from Colombia) and percussion instruments, and does most of the composing. Though he has great respect for alf ethnic music, he says that no one sound has influenced his writ- ing. “| love Brazilian and Afro- Peruvian rhythms, and | listen to classical music on top of that. Sometimes it turns me on and | combine different flavors in my work, t think that sometimes | decompose rather than compose,” he laughs. Fortes’ wine festival will aid Canadian Craft Museum From page 28 Museum at the museum’s new Ca- thedral Place location. It might also be a benefit for the viticulturist, oenolagist, wine snob or any other folk that pine for a good drop of the grape. The festival will be the first event at the new gallery digs, so be careful where you spit that wine. Accompanying the wines from B.C, Washington, Oregon and idaho will be seafood from the kitchens of Joe Fortes. Jazz will also be served by the Chris Sigurdson Trio and Mark Hasselbach and his band atong with singer Lori Paul. Tickets are $75 per person. Kick-off time is scheduled for 6 pm.
