City hits
fire alarm
record

THE NORTH Vancouver City
Fire Department responded to a
record 735 fire calls in 1990.

Of that number, 550 proved to
be false alarms.

Arson, or suspected arson, top-
ped the list of major causes of fire
damage. The second most com-
mon cause of fire in North Van-
couver City in 1990 proved to be
unattended cooking equipment.

Faulty electrical equipment and
careless smoking were the next
most common causes of fire dam-
age. And children playing with
matches or lighters lit three fires
resulting in damage in 1990,

Fire department rescue and
safety crews took a total 1,469
calls during 1990, including am-
bulance, inhalator, rescue, motor
vehicle accidents, public service
and dangerous goods calls.

Total fire losses in the city
amounted to $902,968, up
$485,569 from 1989.

Fire damage to private dwellings
accounted for the largest losses,
totalling $284,512 last year. A fire
last year at Scandals Bar and Grill
Restaurant, located at 127 Lons-
dale Ave., resulted in a loss of
$225,000.

Arson to automobiles resulted
ina total loss of $69,778.

The fire department recorded
no loss of life last year. Five peo-
ple suffered minor injuries in
fire-related incidents.

The department's fleet of 15
vehicles travelled a total 73,842
kilometres last year.
