MAILBOX ‘Airhead portrayals’ just add to today’s moral breakdown Dear Editor: I have spoken directly to Mr. Peter Speck, publisher, about your ‘‘Sunshine Girl’? and the presentations by ‘‘Dr. Ruth.’* He said, ‘‘...if 1 did not feel they were of value and interest to the community, I would not be runn- ing them in my paper.”’ Your May 23 Sunshine Girl leaves me to seriously wonder about Mr. Speck’s views of our community’s values. Do we really need scantily-clad young girls with often no ambi- tion or credentials noted? Do your readers — both men and women — really enjoy your airhead por- trayals of these young women? Does Mr. Speck reaily feel that his community needs a dialogue with Dr. Ruth as to how a 19 year old can’t climax with her boyfriend? The inference is to keep trying — married or not! Or, about the 15-year-long sexual rela- tionship some woman had with her brother-in-law. The media have huge control and impact on what we do. Maclean’s recently said there are 600,000 addiction problems in Quebec while showing six full-page ads on atcohol {about 20 per cent of the issue’s advertising). The May 23 guest columnist said the moral constraints are no longer promulgated by our religious and educational institu- tions. Most religious institutions do teach moral values. However, when we take the bibles out of the classroom and put in condom dispensers, it is no wonder that sexually-transmitted diseases, abortion, and teen pregnancies are at an all-time high. Teachers are stopped from teaching abstinence because it is Godley’s mature optimism considered religious. It is not religious. It is a moral and health issue. We teach that drugs kill, or drinking and driving is wrong. How about it, Mr. Speck — why not print the facts on broken lives resulting from safe sex that is not safe? John Blatherwick, Vancouver’s medical health officer, now wants condom machines in schools. This is the same man who does not seem {to oppose Vancouver’s hosting of the Gay Games, August 4 to Il — 10,000 participants, many of whom will be carriers of the AIDS virus ... what a mess! Let’s get the Ten Command- ments back ... or have we gone too long to know what they are? There is enough confusion out there amongst our kids without adding more from your ‘‘com- munity’’ paper. Mei Bryan West Vancouver Don't be ‘prudish’ about Sunshine Girls Dear Editor: f am = congratulating your staff for helping to bring more sunshine into this world which has become too serious. And I object to your lack of letters published supporting your Sunstune Girls. The Sunshine Gir! always appears to be en- joying herself, and only helps to lighten up the day. Despite what narrow-minded radicals may think, physically attractive women are greatly appreciated in this world. Those people who object to your feature should stop being so prudish and stop forcing their ideas on everyone. Tom Paterson North Vancouver PROBLEMS? . and no one you can share them with? You have quite a line-up ... Hunter, Collins, Bannerman, Metcalfe, and now to our delight, Eleanor Godley. Her Vintage Years column hopefully reflects the views of your more senior readers. “‘Mature optimism’’ would describe her outlook nicely. It’s good to see her back. We missed her Kitchen Ranger column which you carried some years ago. Any hope of her offering up the odd recipe from time to time? D.L.
