NORTH VANCOUVER native Andy Mahood recently finished third in the opening race of the 1989 Player’s

Ltd./GM Motorsport Series at Westwood Motorsport Park.

Mahood places third

NORTH VANCOUVER native
Andy Mahood kicked off the rac-
ing season with a third place finish
in the recent opening round of the
1989 Player’s Ltd./GM
Motorsport Series at Westwood
Motorsport Park.

Other local racing talent includ-
ed North Vancouver’s Brent Hen-
dricks and West Vancouver’s
Susan and Sherold Hadded.

Although Mahood finished
fourth he was bumped up to a
third place finish after race winner
Frank Allers of Coquitlam was
disqualified on a technical violat-
ion.

Third place earns Mahood
$3,250 and points which will go
towards qualification for the na-
tionals held in Quebec.

The Westwood race was first in
the lucrative series of seven races
held in Vancouver and Calgary.

Driver skill and preparation is
the key to this series of showroom
stock cars. Drivers have the choice
of using either a Chevrolet Camaro
IROC-Z or a Pontiac Firebird
Trans-Am.

Each race in the series — both
east and west — offers prize
money of $30,000 for a combined

for the East-West Shootout, where
they will meet the top six drivers
from the eastern series.

Glas wins battle

NORTH VANCOUVER’S Harald
Glas won the Pro Battle of the
Twins, the final event in round
three of the West Coast Challenge
Westwood Roadrace, held June 4.

Glas kept his 650 Hawk out
ahead of Maple Ridge’s Martin
McGill’s Kawasaki EX500 for the
whole distance to win the Battle of
the Twins. McGill finished in se-
cond place followed by Bryan
Henderson of Langley in third
place.

In 600 Production, Glas manag-
ed a tremendous last lap pass on
Langley’s Troy Burstyk — who
finished third — with his Honda
CBR 600 to capture second place.

The day’s big winner was Darryl
Fletcher from New Westminster,
who chalked up firsts in a number
of categories. They include: the
Pro 750 Superbike, Pro 750 Pro-
duction, and Pro 600 Production.
