ITE Se PETE a yas Be ait aa MSE D FATES JOHN TURNER may have ‘‘won’’ that election debate, but since the discussion was between a trio of artful dodgers and slyboots, it makes no difference to most of us. We tose anyway. The debate was typical of poli- tics in this country, you see, nut for what was said but for what was not said. True, there was a lot of heat over free trade, but since no one is sure what free trade por - tends, that was all so much wind in the slips. | happen tz think that it will be a good thing, but am cer- tain Ottawa is stepping into the unknown, just as it did when it drew up the hate laws, the im- migration act of 1967, and a hun- dred other things. In other words, the immigrants are now in contrcl of the immigra- tion appeal process, and a pox on what might happen to the country as a result. Did Turner or Broadbent put in a word for the Canadian majority? Don’t be silly. It was a wonder, indeed, that they didn’t jump for- ward offering 75 per cent multicult. Turner was big on how free trade would ‘‘change the kind of Canada w we are.”" But the kind of Tamer and Broadbent are united with Mulroney in grovelling for the Quebec vote. Mulroney could therefore give Vancouver Island to Quebec, and you wouldn’t even hear a beep out of them.” Five major issues were not even mentioned in those three hours of gobbledygook. Why? Because Mulroney, Turner and Broadbent have a common interest in sup- pressing them. Those issues were: Quebec, to which English Canada takes se- cond place; how the West has been screwed; official bilingualism, which can more accurately be described as a job program for the French; the ruinous deficit, and of course immigration, which is on all tongues except those of the politi- cians. The only time the last issue was even remotely referred to was when Brian Mulroney remarked, sanctimoniously, that he had doubled multicultural appoint- ments to the Immigration and Refugee Board. That board is now, he declared proudly, 50 per cent multicult. . Canada we are is changing daily under his very nose, and he en- courages the process. So do those other donkeys. It’s worth taking a look at why the leaders in this conspiracy of national silence choose not to talk about such issues. Consider, for instance, the disgraceful CF-18 af- fair, in which Winnipeg’s interests were ruthlessly tossed overboard in favor of those of Quebec. Turner and Broadbent are unit- ed with Mulroney in grovelling for the Quebec vote. Mulroney could therefore give Vancouver Island to Quebec, and you wouldn’t even hear a beep out of them. The same applies where official bilingualism is concerned. Would they care if the civil service and all federal institutions became even 100 per cent French? Not at all. Already, the process of Fren- chification is well under way. But Ardagh 986-4366 James Hatton | on FREE TRADE | am against the flawed Mulroney-Reagan trade agreement which is a bad deal for Canadians. It gives away too much for too little in return, If the Agreement were a trade agreement that secured our access to U.S. markets and preserved our sovereignity, ! would support it. A Liberal government will negotiate with the U.S. for a trade agreement which provides jobs without giving up our right to determine our own future. The deficit? It is running, ruin- ously, at about $30 billion a year and is proportionately far higher than that of any other Western country. But why mention it when all three leaders are running around promising in effect to in- crease it? Much better to lock it in a sack and attempt to drown it, like a troublesome cat. That it may one day jump out and bite us to death is of no consequence. As for immigration, there is no depths to which those three fid- dlers will not sink to speed the present disastrous process. Even as I write this, Mulroney was in Toronto promising $25 million to “immigrant women” for job train- ing, and even before the election was called Barbara McDougall had put the new refugee screening pro- cess on ice. Why? Because the” Tories and the other parties will kiss any bum, lick any boot, and sell any soul to get the ethnic vote. Broadbent, by the way, wants to make affirmative action man- datory across the board, meaning he wants minorities to get prefer- red treatment for jobs. Across the board. This hasn’t yet sunk in on Joe Lunchbucket, who is said to vote for Ed. When it does, it'll be too late for Joe to do anything about it. It would be a good point for the other parties to raise, but what can they do when they are n principle committed to much the same thing? Meech Lake and Quebec as a distinct ‘Society with special rights? Why raise that when, once again, there is unanimity and they are all dancing to Robert Bourassa’s tune, and Enelish Canada doesn’t count. Does anyone know of a White Rhino?
