Man jailed for theft A 53-YEAR-OLD Port Hardy man was sentenced Thursday, Sept. 29 in West Vancouver provincial court to six months in jail after he pleaded guilty to a charge of theft under $1,000. Robert Moore was originally charged with theft under $1,500 aud possession of suspected burglary tools following Sept. 29 inci- dents in which a purse was stolen and a knife, crowbar, screwdriver, hatchet, bent coathanger, toolbox and tools were seized by police. Appearing before Judge R.D. Grandison, Moore pleaded guilty to the theft charge and was sentenced to six months in jail. The Crown entered a stay of proceedings In the other charge against Moore. Drug battle gets funding THE PROVINCIAL government recently announced a three-year plan that will add $60 million to the battle against drug and alcohol abuse. The new plan supplements the $26 million a year presently spent on substance abuse programs. ' Highlights of the plan include the funding of innovative preven- tion and treatment programs at the local level; expansion of outpa- tient treatment services; expansion of residential treatment centres and the provision of additional funding to allow them to increase their capacity; improvement of detoxification services and facili- ties; the increase of the capacity of supportive recovery homes; a provinee-wide mixed media campaign; a seniors drug action pro- gram; an Impaired driver awareness program; expansion of the CounterAttack program. Fireworks course offered THE EXPLOSIVES branch of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada will be conducting a fireworks supervisor course for people interested in setting off exhibition-type fireworks. The course runs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Gateway Theatre, Studio B, 6500 Gilbert Road in Richmond. There is no charge for the course and it is open to anyone 18 years of age and older.
