Services needed in OPEN LETTER TO MAYOR MARILYN BAKER With reference to your letter of Jan. 27, | appreciate recciving your comments, but they do fitle to appease my frustration and con- cern over the massive development that continues to go on east of the Seymour River. You mention in the second paragraph of your letter that it was North Vancouver District's ‘‘phi- losophy"’ to put services in place as peopie inoved into this communi- ty. What happened to this ‘‘phi- losophy?”’ Since the new Seymour crossing was put in place all we have seen is housing devclopment upon hous- ing development and no new ser- vices to speak of to go along with this. We have even lost facilitiés such as Deep Cove Stage and the United Church and there has been NO STAFF THANKED MAILBOX EAST OF SEYMOUR DEVELOPMENT new school, NO new shopping, NO new recreational facilities and little increase in the transit system. So here we ere with the district reaping in cnormous revenue from the sale of lots and an increased tax base and what do the residents have to sce for that? Overcrowded schools, traffic bottleneck. in rush hour (returning from downtown al 5:30 p.m. with traffic back-up to Powell Street from Second Nar- rows is not very pleasant), standing room only on buses all the way from downtown, and you still want to keep developing this area with no big push on getting the services in place to meet this de- mand. As you admit’ it is still not definite that we are going to get Indian River School, so how can you still allow more building per- mits to be issucd with more people moving into the Seymour area? Hospital praised Dear Editor: Recently, our 21 month-old-son was admitted to Lions Gate Hospi- tal. He was there for four days, iwo Gf which he was hooked up to an IV. Although his situation was not life threatening, the whole ordcal was very traumatic for all of us. | was allowed to sleep beside him, therefore casing’ his stay in the hospital. Parents are encouraged to stay, not shooed away. 1 cannot say enough kind words about the nurses in pediatric care. Always smiling, always bending backwards to make one feel com- fortable in a very uncomfortable situation. | would especially like to thank Michael’s nurses, Liz and Adrian. The doctors were very suppor- tive, honest and unpretentious. | would like to thank doctors S. Bitman and M. Ramscy for help- ing us through this. I think most of us tend to take our medica] system: and local hos- pital for granted until it is per- sonally needed. Sometimes it is too late. [ urge everyone to become hospital members and or donate a few hours a month as a volunteer. We have one of the finest hospitals in our own back yards. Let us all try to keep it that way, Lisa Kay North Vancouver Faith restored Dear Editor: - ; I appreciate the North Shore News helping me to thank the .people who were so kind to me _ after I hit a rock and fell off my bike at Ambleside on Saturday, Feb. 27 about 4:30 p.m. _ Although I might not recognize them again, I remember the two young men who managed. the acci- dent so capably until the help they’d called arrived. There were three ladies out for a walk who also stopped to offer help and encouragement. The firemen and the ambulance crew | FREESIA 4 with fern | DAFFODILS field grown | CARNATIONS E with fern deserve so much credit for their professionalism and for their gent- ly humorous approach. We are fortunate indeed to share a community with all these people. We also share the staff and facili- ties of the Lions Gate Hospital emergency department which con- tinued to give the care and profes- sional help I needed. Now I have 15 stitches in my scalp, strengthened faith in our society — and a CYCLING HELMET. Camilla Amundsen West Vancouver 5 ror 92.99 10 ror BOE 5 ror 92.99 There are enough children already in Indian River areca to fill the school now, The majority of Deep Cove/ Dollarton residents moved into this area and paid a premium for thei houses, and continue to do so with taxes, to enjoy a more tranquil way of life. With this council destroying all this you are creating a lot of stress in this community. You now scem to be supporting the high-rise development on the Dollarton Highway at Matsumoto Shipyards. In summary, § would like to ask these questions: Why do the resi- dents have to lobby and go to these lengths to get a school nut in place for the increased population? Where are the revenues going from lot sales and the increased tax base in the Seymour area? What is be- ing done to handle the increased traffic bottlenecks around the Se- cond Narrows Bridge?
