26 - Wednesday, Aprii 22, 1987 - North Shore News SEYMOUR SNEAK PREVIEW Forestry Week kicks off NATIONAL FORESTRY Week kicks off May 3 and runs through May 9. The highlight of the week, for the North Shore, is a visit to Seymour Demonstration Forest by federal Forests Minister Gerald Merrithew. The minister will be given a sneak preview of the demonstra- tion forest and then preside over a tree planting ceremony, to be per- formed by a group of local Grade 5 school children. Other plans scheduled for the week include a display by West Vancouver Junior Forest Wardens at Park Royal shopping centre. The display, a series of posters, handouts and a slide show, will be located in the east wing of the North Mall and will be on show May 3, 8 and 9. National Forestry week also features a series of walks through Stanley Park. Adults experience the joy of learning. OVER 17,000 North Shore adults participate in schoo! board conti- nuing education programs, accor- ding to Dr. Doug Ledgerwood, . director of North Shore Continu- ing Education. “Our registration figures have’. increased more than 10 per cent per year in each of the past three years. This is in large measure a result of a concerted effort to en- sure quality instruction in all our courses. Nearly all of our.350 in- ~ structors: participated in.two pro- .. fessional development.sessions last year and the results are being ap-_ preciated by our participants,”’ he said. . : The rising number of adults enrolling in continuing education is a.trend experienced throughout North America. A survey of adult education in Canada done by Statistics Canada reports that ap- proximately 3.2 million Canadians participate in at least one..adult education course each year. The typical adult learner is in the 25 to 45 age group and is already well- educated. While job-related courses were preferred by men, women were equally attracted. to job-related, hobby and personal development courses. “‘This profile accurately reflects our participants, particularly in relation to the educational level. A survey of our own North Shore adult learners shows that most have a post-secondary or university education,’’ says Ledgerwood. However, he notes, an increas- ing number of others are now seeking to improve their education, particularly in the ‘area of high school completion. In a community where adults outnumber school children by more than four.to one, the provi- sion for lifelong learning oppor- tunities is essential. North Shore Continuing Education offers everything from one-night, mini lectures and one-day Saturday workshops to ten-week courses and year-long programs. The Joy of Learning Magazine lists several hundred courses that can be taken for fun and profit. These include high school comple- tion, career training, English lan- guage training, other languages, art and recreation and a wide range of general interest courses. The magazine is available through your local library or at the Lucas Continuing Education Cen- tre, 2132 Hamilton Avenue, North Vancouver. Call 985-8741 for more information. The walks, sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Forestry, will be conducted by members of the Association of B.C. Profes- siona! Foresters. The two-kilometre walk will take approximately one and a_ half hours and brings people past Beaver Lake in the 1,000-acre park. ARA ELMAJIAN D “It gives us an opportunity to talk to people about the forests and hopefully it will give them a different perspective about them,” said Stirling Angus, spokesman for the organizers. Tours start and end at the Stanley Park Children’s Zoo and run from 1 to 4 p.m. May 3, 9, and 10. DS. However, there was a problem with the replacement track links and they had to be reordered. “Because they didn't have a loaner 215 in stock, Finning reinstalled my old undercarriage so | could go back to work. When the new links arrived | took the machine in again and they were installed. “t really can't call the second trip downtime because like it says in their NO RISK REPAIR guarantee, Finning reimbursed me for a day's rental on the 215 when they ran past the repair completion date. “I've run Cat equipment and dealt with Finning for many years now and when | had problems in the past, they went that extra yard to help me when they really weren't obliged to.
