IT’S A toss-up — but several realtors are recom-
mending that detached houses are a better bet for
first time buyers rather than the more compact
townhouses.

The reasons vary, but it all comes down to a
few basic principles: detached homes offer more
privacy, more room and, above all, more guaran-
teed return due to the surrounding land.

But buying a home doesn’t necessarily mean
first time buyers have-ta splurge on the biggest
and the best. As one realtor put it, if purchasers
are willing to put a little work into their new
home, that all important first purchase can actual-
ly be on the modest side to, begin with — then,
depending on the amount of*work done, it can
slowly be developed into a showcase.
